Diabetes is a condition in which your body does not properly process food, causing blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. Over time, high blood glucose levels may damage your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 29 million Americans are diabetic and another 86 million Americans are pre-diabetic—that’s 1 out of 3 adults! Of the 29 million who are diabetic, almost 1/3 are undiagnosed and of the 86 million who are pre-diabetic, 9 out of 10 are unaware of it. Without intervention, as many as 30% of the individuals who are pre-diabetic will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years. That’s why the district is again partnering with the YMCA of Boulder Valley to offer subsidized participation for benefit-eligible employees who enroll in the YMCA’s CDC-approved Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP).
The unsubsidized cost of the DPP is $429. Under our partnership, the district will subsidize $334 of the cost and the participant will pay $95 (subject to successful completion of the program and attendance requirements). The program is a 12 month program and includes an educational component as well as a complimentary 12 month membership to the YMCA of Boulder Valley. The educational component consists of weekly sessions for the first 6 months of the program, followed by monthly sessions for the final 6 months. In addition to your CDC-approved curriculum, you will work with a lifestyle coach who will facilitate your sessions and is specially trained to help you learn new skills, encourage you to set and meet your goals and keep you motivated.
To participate in the program you must be benefits-eligible and you must be pre-diabetic (if you’ve not previously been diagnosed as pre-diabetic you can click here to take a quick quiz to see if you qualify). Subsidized enrollments are limited to a total of 12 participants for the fall session and registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Below is the schedule for this fall’s program:
· Mapleton YMCA, 2850 Mapleton Avenue, Boulder
Wednesdays, starting September 13, 2017, 6:00-7:00 p.m.
